2012 - International Year of Cooperatives

On December 21, 2009, the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 64/136, declaring 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives, highlighting the contribution of cooperatives to worldwide socio-economic development. The cooperative community is excited for the recognition and opportunity to create more awareness of the impact cooperatives make around the World on a socio-economic level.

Every country is tasked to create programs that educate and inform their citizens about cooperatives.  The International Cooperative Alliance has been working to develop a cohesive framework at the international level.

Meanwhile in the United States, NCBA has taken responsibility for coordinating the efforts of the cooperative community and has created three committees for the planning of 2012 in the U.S. We have also launched a survey and hosted a webinar . At this time, NCBA has recruited over 100 interested cooperators and gathered creative marketing ideas to make The Year of the Cooperative a memorable and rewarding year.

The declaration for the United Nations has created much excitement among cooperatives. You can participate by:

  • Joining a committee
  • Donate to the initiative
